So Many Things

There are so many things I want to tell you about Finn!

He is a wonder and amazes me every single day.

Last week he would pick *nothing* up from his tray. Then it was bread, raisins. Yesterday strips of pork chop. Today broccoli!! Although it was cold so not quite as interesting as the bread *with* peanut butter on it. Tonight, potatoes and salmon. Though he still won't touch a banana himself.

He has a fascinating sense of humor. If he wants to be funny he curls his lip up better than Elvis and does this funny little panting thing. If you surprise him he bursts out in giggles. He has the strangest wry smile. I've never seen a baby smile wryly but Finn does and often.

Nothing excites him more than seeing papa walk across the lawn throwing balls for Whisper. Then he's torn, does he follow Whisper or flirt with papa .. hmmm, jury is still out on that one.

He is fascinated by the teeniest tiniest things .. a whisper of a feather floating above our bed, dust sparking in the sunlight.

He plays ball like a pinball machine, his legs flapping back and forth.

He still isn't rolling or crawling but the kid can move .. and fast. Well, I should take that back. He does roll but it so rare and random. He rolled for the first time from back to tummy on Monday, the 23rd of December. And again tonight when I was out of the room. That's it! I think he's holding out on us.

This week he figured out how to get one knee behind him so he could lean further. And a few weeks ago we quit giving him toys. We just put the entire toy basket next to him and he empties it by playing with one toy at a time and then plays with the empty basket.

On his tummy he gets everywhere combat crawling with his arms. I've seen him get up on two knees once. Last week. He mostly just gets mad and yells and arches his back, then momma reminds him again how easy it is to roll over ... by pulling one leg across the other and then Flip. He's happy again.

He misses nothing. If I move or rearrange something in the house he will notice and then spend several minutes looking for the moved item or figuring out what is different. That said, last night we put him in a new bed and he snuggled down like he'd slept there every night of his life. He also knows where every mirror is in the house and will prod you to take him to see himself after most diaper changes but definitely after you've dressed him or put his pajamas on.

He loves books and will examine every single detail on the page. His favorite right now is a very clearly illustrated book about the zoo. His favorite page, the one with the spiders.

I am not sure why this was sitting here as a draft so long except maybe I was going to add pictures. Some day I'll come back and do that. In the meantime, almost a year is passed and it will be time to write this again.

Christmas is coming ...

Christmas is coming and shortly after that Finn's 2nd birthday. PLEASE REMEMBER this is NOT a request for gifts, but knowing that some of you will ask we thought we'd make a list with the next year in mind.

First an update on our wonder boy ... he continues to amaze us! You all know he started walking in October, it has given him a new found freedom. He loves carrying things from here to there and back again and recently comes to ask for our hand so he can pull us in his desired direction. He can really pull, of course if he wants to get there fast he asks for two hands. Last night he really surprised us ... he was practically running between us, one hand in momma's the other in papa's.

Finn is also really starting to talk. A new word pops out almost every day, repeated after something we might say. Choochoo, apple, car, opa, ball, cracker, auto and suddenly last night houte (house/haus). On a recent walk in Gent, Finn suddenly pointed and shouted AUTO, it was the first time he said it in regards to a real vehicle instead of one of his toys. His comprehension surprises us all ... He seems to have no problem switching between three languages. Last week when I picked him up from daycare he heard one of the teachers call 'salut' as she was leaving. Finn turned and waved! He LOVES to wave at anybody and everybody and does not discriminate with his blown kisses either, they fly freely.

So, what could a little boy who seems to have everything possibly want?

Well oma, opa, momma and papa together are going to buy him a play kitchen. We've chosen a wooden kitchen made by a single craftsman ... it's kind of big but will be nice when friends come over to play.
So anything to go with the kitchen is great ...
   - pots and pans
   - mixing bowls
   - chef's hat
   - wooden fruits and veg, I've put a few sets I really like on his amazon.de wishlist.
   - shopping basket
(Momma has already picked out and bought a tea set - you can see it on the amazon list or momma's facebook page)

We are also thinking ahead to next summer, since Christmas and his birthday come so close together it might be nice to have a few things that he can enjoy next year in the garden. Big trucks for moving rocks and dirt, cars and bulldozers for the sandbox ... We have put a couple of 'Green Toys' on the amazon list, he already has the airplane and now the seaplane and he loves them both.

Finn absolutely LOVES music, he sways, dances, claps his hands and even sings a few notes himself. He really comes to life when music is playing.

As far as clothes go, we've been so lucky to receive lots of hand-me-downs from two friends. He definitely has plenty for this winter. If you want to buy anything for next spring / summer it's best to not get anything smaller than a 98. He currently wears 86 and even some 92s in tshirts and trousers.

Finn likes to 'work' with papa and is fascinated by his tools. Santa is filling his stocking with a mini flashlight and tape measure. He has a really cheap set of tools which could be upgraded (but maybe this is for next year).

The things we put on the amazon.de list are mostly to give you an idea. Sometimes we compared different things to find the best option for us. We love wooden toys (for indoors). We love games that encourage Finn to be creative ... for example the Piratenkegeln (Pirate Bowling Pins) can also be used to play figures on a boat, with voices and action.

I have this problem ...

... I can never choose just one photo.

I was really worried that Finn wouldn't get to wear his stack of 3 months sleepers.

But since our new little house is in the corner of a forrest and I've been painting
- with all the windows open -

Out they came and they fit great!
And with room to grow a bit.

If only he would just slow down a little.

sleeperjoy

This sweet sleeper was a gift from the Martins.

Yes, I am supposed to be packing, but I'm tired. Finn has been an angel this week.

We spent Monday and Tuesday in Kalken packing (although you can hardly tell)
and then Wednesday and Thursday painting, his room is done!!

The Stuffs that Dreams are Made of

Today we celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary.

Although maybe not in a so traditional way.

We indulged ourselves with a sleep-in. If you can call it that. Up at 5 to feed a boy we went back to his own cradle until 7, when he joined us for a chat before dropping off for a couple more hours.

So we did too.

When we all finally crawled out it was to feed the boy again and pack the car.
Off to our new home to work, clean and paint.

I'm afraid we haven't shown you much .. but here are just a few more photos.
I'm hoping to have more time after the move to give you a proper tour.

The stuff that dreams are made of, don't you think?

As I write this, I can hear Finn and his papa having a chat in the next room.

My heart swells and feels so full.

What a dream of a day!

A Whale of a Time - JPA

And we couldn't be happier.

This was my attempt at getting a cute pic of his Whale outfit from Cousin Anna ...
no momma, my hands are more important.

But haha Finn, momma was ready with the camera when you fell asleep.

A Wrastle with Elle

More action ... Finn is a busy fellow these days.

  Finn & Elle

He loves to wrestle with Elle
.. the sweetest softest Elephant ever ..
was a gift from the Moores.

I'm never quite sure who's winning there is often
rather a lot of grunts and groans coming from their corner.
